Trowbridge and St Mellons have a rich history, having been among a cluster of rural villages including St Fagans and Rhiwbina. Although these areas are now considered to be very much part of the fabric of the wider Cardiff city region, as recently as 100 years ago they barely registered on the map.

Even more remarkably, Old St Mellons was once regarded to sit outside of Wales altogether. In 1535, when the Laws in Wales Act came into force, Old St Mellons was officially part of Monmouthshire and therefore considered to be part of England.

Although it crossed back over the border long before, it was not until 1974 that St Mellons officially became part of Cardiff.

A major building boom in the latter 20th century created the Trowbridge, Rumney, Pontprennau and New St Mellons estates, officially marking the transformation from rural village to established metropolitan suburb.
