The history

From landmarks defined by centuries under Norman rule to an iconic pirate of the Caribbean seas, Llanrumney’s heritage holds an important place in Cardiff’s history.

Llanrumney has long been associated with the Morgan family, whose coat of arms sits above the fireplace at Llanrumney Hall, the home of five generations of Morgans.

The family’s most infamous member was Sir Henry Morgan, a successful privateer. His reputation as a fearful buccaneer inspired the popular brand of rum, Captain Morgan, created in 1944.

Sir Henry Morgan’s influence is not limited to rum. Llanrumney shares its name with a populated area in the St Mary Region in the north of Jamaica, an area so called as it is on the site of one of Morgan’s Jamaican properties, which he wistfully named Llanrumney.
